Industry Consolidation Advances

Executives from SBC, AT&T, Verizon and MCI recently attended congressional hearings regarding the proposed mergers of SBC/AT&T and Verizon/MCI respectively. Signs at the hearings indicated that prospects for an eventual government approval of the mergers were good. However, the same day that the hearings were held, organized opposition to the proposed deals has emerged.

A coalition of several companies, including XO Communications, Covad Communications and Broadwing Communications, plans   to challenge the mergers.

Consultants should closely monitor the proposed mergers as they progress through the approval process.  Carrier consolidation could present service issues as personnel, operating units, and, potentially, service offerings are rearranged within the new entities. As merger deadlines draw near, end users who fear they may be negatively impacted by the mergers should seek to protect themselves. In particular, end users who feel a merger will create a substantial service disruption may wish to account for such problems in their carrier agreements.

Welcome New Consultant

& VAC Members

P.R. Session Available

In January of this year, Heather Groll, the STC's public relations consultant, conducted a session for the Education Committee in which she talked participating consultants through the process of identifying appropriate media outlets for their individual areas of expertise. She then advised on working with

appropriate individuals to maxi-imize exposure and opportunities for various types of press outlets. Both the PowerPoint slideshow, as well as a recording of the session, are available on the STC's website.

The slideshow is available in the Public Relations area on the Member Benefits page. Members may obtain the recording of the session for $25 by contacting STC headquarters.
