By HENRY BAIRD One would expect that that the widespread disruptions caused by last year’s hurricanes would serve as a wake-up call to users to pay more attention to the vulnerabilities of their communications systems. Lines recently administered a survey to STC consultants to learn more about how their clients are responding to these potential challenges. We received back 35 completed, valid surveys, a response rate of about 22%. Consultant Perspectives Figure 1 shows that among the 35 respondents, 11 estimate that they have billed over 100 hours just on tasks related to Business Continuity Planning over the past 18 months. If we omit the three respondents who indicated that they are not active in this area, we thus learn that about 34% of the consultant responders are active in BCP work to at least this extent. For consultants, the Gulf and Atlantic Coast weather events of the past two years provide an opportunity to educate clients about protection options and emphasize the importance of adding protection measures, or even the necessity of implementing newer, more robust design paradigms. Of course, given the broad range of tasks that are BCP-related, just one activity measurement is insufficient for a clear indication. Client interest is the better metric. Continued on Page 3 ò |
