Types of Membership and Requirements

STC Definition of a Telecommunications Consultant

A person who by training, education and/or experience is proficient in applying the knowledge and skills of telecommunications consulting; and a person who is actively employed in the profession of telecommunications consulting; and a person who is financially and organizationally independent of any organization which manufacturers, distributes or sells any telecommunications equipment, device or transmission service.


Consultant Membership Requirements
The individual must have at least three years experience in telecommunications, including one year as a telecommunications consultant and be currently employed as a telecommunications consultant. For the purpose of this qualification, experience in telecommunications may include:

Employment by a telecommunications manufacturer or distributor in a sales or engineering capacity; or
Study at an institution of higher education in telecommunications; or
Employment by a user of telecommunications services or equipment as a communications manager; or
Employment or activity as a telecommunications consultant; or
Similar or related experience
The individual shall agree to uphold the professional ethical standards, and Bylaws of the STC, including faithful adherence to the Code of Ethics, and shall continue to do so as long as the individual remains a member of the Society.

Prospective members shall provide evidence of having conducted themselves in accordance with the professional and ethical standards of the STC for several years prior to their applying for membership. (This evidence is provided by the applicant in the form of client references which are submitted with the application form and signed Code of Ethics.)

Associate Consultant Membership Requirements
Individuals who are active in the profession of telecommunications consulting, but who have not yet met all of the qualifications of membership defined above may, at the discretion of the Membership Committee, be designated Associate Consultant Members. If elected in this category, the individual must request that he/she be considered for full consultant membership status when he/she does meet all the qualifications of consultant membership. Until that time, the individual has all the rights and responsibilities of a consultant member, except for the right to hold office and vote.

Affiliate Membership Requirements
Individuals involved in telecommunications, such as end-users, educators, and press, who do not otherwise qualify for membership in the STC may, at the discretion of the Membership Committee, be designated as Affiliate members. They do not have the right to vote or hold office.

Vendor Advisory Council Requirements
The STC's only company membership is open to firms that manufacture, sell and maintain information technology and other telecommunications systems and services.
